Real Plane Facts
Known as the Super Hornet the F/A-18E is a diverse fighter jet based primarily on Aircraft Carriers. It first flew in 1995 and has since been flying in the U.S.A and Australia. First flown in combat during the famous on-going Operation Southern Watch in Iraq, the multi-role fighter also took part in the Operation Iraqi Freedom campaign in 2003.
During the course of one cruise with the U.S. Aircraft Carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower in 2006 F/A-18Es took part in 70 strafing runs and dropped around 140 precision-targeted bombs – a busy tour by any measure.
Boeing has reportedly delivered 367 F/A-18Es to the U.S. Navy as of 2008, making it a very popular aircraft by military fighter jet standards.
